College student media is facing unprecedented challenges, from financial pressures to administrative opposition, lack of support from the profession to the disdain or open misunderstanding of the role and function of a free student press. These issues are complicated by the challenge of how to stay relevant in an age of disruptive technology and rapidly changing media consumption habits.
We invite college media advisers and students to attend a “Future of Student Media Summit” in Spring 2016 and join a coalition of partners in a conversation that could shape our collective destiny.
The College Media Institute, in partnership with the Student Press Law Center and The John Seigenthaler Center, Newseum Institute, will play host to the first Summit Feb. 26-27 in Nashville. Discussions led by industry thought leaders will include reviewing revenue and business models to sustain college media, and issues related to the First Amendment, newsgathering and free expression on today’s campus.
There is no registration fee to attend the Nashville Summit, however, total attendance is limited to 100 and limited to only three representatives per school. Please register using your school issued .edu email address.
A second Summit, April 8-9, will be at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio in partnership with the Scripps College of Communication, the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and The Post Athens. Panels of innovators will lead discussions that include exploring emerging media distribution models, and examining new data on college media consumption and national college advertising trends.
More information about registration and logistics for the Ohio Summit will be released soon. Click here for updates.
